The Manager's Path in the age of AI

What I took from it

  • Management = technical skills, signal processing, people skills. AI has made the last two harder, not easier.
  • Visibility isn’t understanding. AI can tell you what someone worked on, but summaries strip out tone, hesitation and what goes unsaid.
  • AI drafts become AI decisions. Once it writes a performance review, it’s quietly deciding for you. Write accountable decisions yourself.
  • Cheap code creates new politics. Teams rebuild instead of talking to owners, and AI takes dependencies across team boundaries nobody agreed to.
  • Spend some of the productivity gain on “slowing down”: design reviews, real conversations, following up on surprises.
  • My rule from this: talk to people more than to the AI.
