A common Sitecore 9 Experience Profile error

Recently I set up Sitecore 9.1 (scaled) for our UAT environment. When I opened the Experience Profile from the Launchpad, I got an error and no data was displayed in the dashboard.

In the CM log I found the following:

I searched online and found that a lot of people had seen this kind of error. Compiling their suggestions, I found the following:

  • An xConnect certificate issue: check whether the root has duplicate certificates.
  • Ensure the Newtonsoft.Json.dll version is the same as in the vanilla Sitecore package.
  • The CM server could be missing a connection string to xconnect.search.
  • Check xConnect logs, thumbprint, windows service logs, xConnect thumbprint details in App_Config and the app settings file.
  • Rebuild the xDB index in Solr.

I tried all of the above, and the following as well, but there was nothing in the xConnect log and no issue with the certificate.

  • Ensured that the xConnect service is accessible from the Sitecore instance.
  • Ensured that the SOLR server used for xDB indexes is running and accessible from xConnect instances.
  • Ensured that the Contacts collection of the Shard databases is populated with new contacts.

Then I tried to create a contact list from the List Manager and got another error. In the log I found this:

The error said the models conflict and XConnectModel doesn’t have a remote version, so I realised it could be related to the xConnect model. Then I found that our custom xConnect model was not in the “App_Data/Models” directory. Once I put it there, data started appearing in the Experience Profile.

The error we get doesn’t always point to the real issue, so it is worth checking the surrounding components too.
